Marina Joice Matney, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away at her home in Thomasville, NC, on May 11, 2025, at the age of 63. Born on November 18, 1961, in Detroit, MI, she was the cherished daughter of the late Aaron Rice and Mary Frances Morgan Matney.
Marina spent her formative years in Trinity, NC, where she graduated from Trinity Senior High School. She pursued her passion for creativity as a self-employed interior designer, transforming showrooms and elegant homes with her artistic touch. Her love for painting was evident not only in her professional life but also in her personal endeavors.
A woman of many talents, Marina found joy in painting, sewing blankets for children, and solving crossword and sudoku puzzles. Her greatest delight, however, was spending time with her family and grandchildren, whom she adored deeply. She was a member of the Archdale-Trinity Art Council, where she shared her love for arts and crafts, often teaching her grandchildren these cherished skills.
Marina had a vibrant, sweet, and loving soul that could light up any room. Her laughter and sense of humor were infectious, bringing smiles to all who knew her. Music played an integral part in her life, both in playing and listening, adding melody to her joyful spirit.
Preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Luther Johnny Matney and Aaron Rice Matney, Jr., and her son Timothy Lee Aikens, Marina leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth. She is survived by her son Josiah Aaron Matney; her daughters Mandy Gail Matney and Cristy Matney Lawson, along with Cristy's husband, Johnny "P" Paul Lawson; and her seven treasured grandchildren: Alyssa Morgan Matney, Kaleb Dain Lawson, Avery Hunter Lawson, Adilyn Nicole Lawson, Carly Nicole Aikens, Celsie Joyce Aikens, and Brice Roger Aikens.
In accordance with her wishes, no formal services will be held. Marina Joice Matney's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her, a bright burning star that illuminated even the darkest spaces.
